The Archaeological Museum of Salt
The museum was established in 1983 as a regional museum dedicated to showcasing the history of the civilization that distinguished the Balqa region throughout different eras. The exhibits in the museum are arranged chronologically, starting from the Chalcolithic period and ending with the later Islamic era. The museum is located in a building that is itself one of the heritage houses in the city of Salt, which was once home to the Tuqan family. It houses archaeological artifacts found in various sites across the Balqa Governorate.
The Salt Historical Museum (Abu Jaber House)
It is a heritage building located in the center of Salt city, dating back to the late 19th century. The building, which was renovated in 1892, covers an area of 700 square meters. The reconstruction process, carried out by the Al-Jawabra family (Abu Jaber), consisted of two phases. The first phase involved building the eastern side using white stone brought from the Wadi Shu’aib area, while the second phase, which began in 1896, involved constructing the western side using yellow stone sourced from the Al-Sallalem area. The Al-Jawabra family lived in this house until 1936, after which they moved to Amman. The building was then rented out to several families, later becoming a Red Crescent center and a school for children, which negatively impacted the distinctive artwork of the building.
Al-Hammam Street in Salt… The Essence of Heritage and the Scent of the Past.
A heritage path located in the center of Salt city in the Balqa Governorate, Al-Hammam Street stretches approximately 280 meters within the old town. It was established at the end of the 19th century and was named after the presence of a Turkish bath that existed until the late 1930s. The street is characterized by commercial shops on the ground floors and residential apartments on the upper floors.
The street reflects the architectural style of the buildings from the period in which it was established, dating between 1881 and 1918. The construction system from that era is distinguished by arches, vaulted ceilings, and thick walls, sometimes up to a meter thick, along with windows featuring pointed and rounded arches. The buildings were constructed using the yellow stone typical of Salt city. The second floor of most buildings on the street usually features a large number of openings directly overlooking the street, with two or three windows in each opening.
